Healthy Eating Tip

Shakeology Q & A’s

With the release of Shakeology from Beachbody, numerous questions have surfaced regarding this new meal replacement shake. Fortunately for us, we have a fitness expert to address these questions, Steve Edwards. As more questions become available, I’ll post them as well.

Before I turn it over to Steve Edwards on the Q & A, let me address the biggest question (comment actually) that I hear the most: Shakeology is expensive.

True Shakeology is $119.95 for 30 days. Which breaks down further to about $4 a day. If we looked at that fact ONLY, we could say, “You’re right, it is expensive.” But Shakeology is a meal replacement. Now imagine if you will what it costs to get a meal, or some of us, a Starbucks. Just about the same. The exception is, Shakeology is good for you! Starbucks will fill you up with caffeine and sugar. Fast food will fill you up with fat, and vast amounts of calories. If you take a look at Shakeology from the meal perspective, and that it’s improving your fitness and nutrition, I think you will find that the price is fair, and also in the same ball park as what you would spend for lunch, a meal, or Starbucks.

Shakeology, Q & A. By Steve Edwards.

Should I continue to take Activit, Peak Health, or other multi-vitamins along with Shakeology?

While Shakeology contains a lot of vitamins and minerals it’s still recommended that you take a multi-vitamin, especially if you’re working out. In fact, Shakeology will help increase the bioavailability of your vitamin if taken together. If you skip your vitamin your nutrient bases will still be covered but an active person—especially doing a workout like P90X—will always be struggling to meet the nutrients requirements placed on the body. Combining Peak Health Formula and Shakeology can keep you charging through even the most intense exercise program.

I already have some Meal Replacement. Should I throw it out and switch to Shakeology?

You shouldn’t throw it out but Shakeology is a far more thorough formulation. Use your old Meal Replacement at times when you’re active or as a “poor man’s Recovery Formula”. The higher sugar and lower fiber content of Meal Replacement make it better around the time you are exercising.

Can I take this and Results and Recovery Formula?

Yes but not together! Recovery Formula should only be taken during or after exercise when you’ve been exhausting your body’s blood sugar. At any other time Shakeology would be your preferred option.

Should I still take an omega supplement?

Yes as there is no EPA/DHA (the two omega fatty acids in fish oil) in Shakeology.

How about Cal/Mag?

One serving of Shakeology has 500 milligrams of calcium, meaning that you can cut your dosage of Cal/Mag in half. It’s recommended that you take your Cal/Mag with Shakeology as it will help your body absorb its nutrients.

There is no food coloring. How is one green and the other brown?

The ingredients (herbal powders, grass powders, vegetable powders, and some fruit and berry powders) make color green. The base of chocolate blend is also green, but the chocolate and cocoa powders turn the color “chocolate”.

Why does the chocolate have more protein?

The serving size for chocolate is 8 grams higher than for greenberry. The extra ingredients added for the chocolate blend (mostly chocolate powder and cocoa powder) add an additional 2 grams of protein for the serving size.

Does this mean I don’t have to eat any more veggies?

Not that we recommend it but, yes, you could get away with skipping your veggies if your drink Shakeology daily. Keep in mind that you still need to fill out the rest of your caloric needs and veggies are the best source of both nutrients and fiber you can eat. The healthiest diets will still contain vegetables.

What kind of protein is it made with?

The primary source of protein is from whey, which comes from milk. Whey is one of the most bioavailable protein sources. Translation: it speeds to its work of repairing your muscles and its amino acids are readily used by your body.

Is it a good source of fiber?

At 3 grams per 140 calories Shakeology is a balanced source of fiber. More importantly, its fiber sources are varied, coming from apple pectin, flax, chia meal, and yacon. The latter also happens to be one of the best prebiotic sources known to man.

Can I drink this right before a workout?

Shakeology would be much better than a meal prior to working out. If it’s immediately before, however, you’d be better served by something with more sugar and less fiber for rapid absorption, such as Recovery Formula or Meal Replacement.

Can I drink this right after a workout?

Again, it’s better than many other options available but less perfect than something designed primarily for this purpose, such as Recovery Formula.

Does it contain caffeine?

Shakeology contains no caffeine. It does contain green tea extract but the caffeine has been removed.

Is it vegetarian?

The only non-vegetarian ingredient is whey protein, which comes from milk.

I am a diabetic. How will it affect me?

We aren’t your doctor so we can’t give you an official word on this but we’re working on trying to get Shakeology approved by the American Diabetes Association.

Can I give it to my kids?

Once again, we’re in a legal realm, which we’re working on. But considering that kids are “approved” to eat Ding Dongs and Cocoa Puffs and whatever other godforsaken junk we’re pretty certain that it will clear the regulatory radar.

What about pregnant and nursing mothers?

And, again, we may run into legal stumbles but c’mon, this stuff is nothing but healthy natural foods.

Can I mix this in with food I’m cooking/baking?

While possible, cooking would upset the nutrient balance of Shakeology’s ingredients and it’s highly recommended that you drink it at room temperature or cooler.

Will it mix OK in my shaker cup?

Shakeology mixes at least as well as most meal replacement shakes and can be hand mixed easily. For a drive-in style creamy shake, however, a blender is preferred.

Is it OK to drink more than one shake per day? Or to replace more than one meal per day?

Yes, but it is not recommended to replace more than 2 meals per day.

For somebody who works at a company that focuses on fitness, I am alarmingly unfit. So I know how tough it can be when you’re feeling like an out-of-shape pink monkey stuck in the middle of a . . . flock? Herd? Pack? What’s a bunch of brown monkeys called, anyway? No matter; I work in an office where everybody else uses their lunch hour to Bring It!® by doing a P90X® workout while I surf the Web or work on writing the next great American screenplay—both noble pursuits, but they’re not making my tummy any flatter.

So I decided to look into which Beachbody® workout program would be best for someone who’s just dipping her toe back into the pool of fitness after an exteeeeeeeended dry spell. And how do y’all get to participate? Why, by deciding which of the following statements are true and which are false.

True or False?

True AND False: Slim in 6® is a super-easy way to get started. Slim in 6 is an excellent way to reimmerse yourself in regular physical exercise after you’ve been away from it for a while, but the compound adjective “super-easy” should be sending up some red flags for the thinking person. Make no mistake: even though Slim in 6 is listed in the Getting Started section of Beachbody.com, YOU ARE GOING TO FEEL IT. Always remember that returning to physical activity after a long layoff is going to require some work, and it’s best to consult with your doctor to make sure you’re up to the rigors of what’s going to be asked of you. Then once you get the all-clear, go ahead and take the plunge—you’ll be glad you did!

True: P90X should be reserved for those who’ve already built up some strength and stamina. While some daring souls have plunged straight into P90X—and had some amazing results doing it—folks who’ve been sedentary for a considerable amount of time (like yours truly) might want to start a little lower on the Beachbody workout food chain. Tony’s Power 90® is a good way to prepare for P90X. So are Slim in 6, Turbo Jam®, and Shaun T’s Rockin’ Body®.

False: Yoga Booty Ballet® Pure & Simple Yoga is so easy, it feels almost like cheating. Don’t let the soothing music or yoga’s reputation as the prime road to relaxation fool you—yoga works all your major muscle groups and helps strengthen your core. So while it’s a great way to get started, stretching your muscles and increasing your lung capacity, remember that it has three different levels of difficulty so you can keep challenging yourself as you learn and grow stronger.

Food Diaries Double Weight Loss

Beachbody has just upgraded their online menu planning and daily food diary pages.  These new features of the Beachbody site are a fantastic tool to help you reach your goals.  See what research has proven to support this.  Grab some paper and a pen and get ready to up your weight loss. 

According to the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, your biggest friend to weight loss might just be a piece of paper and a pen. 

“Keeping weekly food records are key to successful weight loss.”

Nearly 1,700 overweight Americans participated in a 6 month weight loss study.  Each participant was encouraged to exercise 6 days a week and follow a heart healthy low fat, low sodium diet rich in fresh produce and low fat dairy.  The results were amazing.  Each participant lost an average of 13 pounds.  But the most interesting thing discovery is that those that did not keep a diary of what they ate lost an average of 9 pounds.  Those that kept daily records of what they ate, lost nearly 20 pounds. That’s double the amount of weight lost. 

So, how do you keep good records of the food you have eatten?  Simply list everything you’ve eatten during the day and the calories of each item.  If you have eatten at a restaurant, simply write down what you ate on the receipt or send yourself a text.  If you are unsure of the calorie content of an item, you can look it up on the Beachbody website using the custom menu planner.  Using the meal planner is not just calorie counting, it is calorie “Accounting”.  This creates a great accountability tool to support you on your journey.

How I Overcame Compulsive Overeating

My biggest challenge in life so far has been conquering my compulsive eating habit. I remember so clearly the hopelessness I felt because I had no control over my impulses. I would literally sit down to a pint of Häagen-Dazs® every day and swear that tomorrow I would start my diet. There are also vivid memories of me downing an entire bag of Chips Ahoy!® chocolate chip cookies and an entire big bag of Doritos®! I had those moments of sitting in my car, opening a jar of peanut butter, and polishing off almost half of it, and then driving to a fast food place for a burger and fries. And let’s not forget the CHEESE! I am a Cheesehead, after all, and I would eat blocks of it at a time.

When I think of that now, it truly makes me sick to my stomach. How could my poor body handle that? No wonder my digestion was so screwed up and I have cellulite so bad—even now. You can’t possibly expect to abuse your body like that and put such demands on your digestive system and not have major issues. I remember jogging around my block at 4:00 AM, desperate to burn off those calories, and then dropping down to the ground into a heap of tears praying for control and the strength to get my life on track. I do know that I was eating out of emotion—not knowing how to cope with certain feelings I was having.

I knew I had to confront my demons head on and figure it out. I’m not sure of the exact moment I decided to change. It was an accumulation of emotion and just being fed up with feeling and looking bad. Enough was enough! So, I joined a support group and through that program I learned how to eat properly. I learned about portion control.

Growing up, I was never taught any of those things. My mother had been severely overweight when I was growing up, and she loved to bake. And I mean BAKE EVERYTHING you can possibly think of. I would wake up every Saturday morning to hot chocolate chip cookies, gooey brownies, pies, homemade bread, you name it. I would stuff myself until I couldn’t eat another bite. Having that support group made me accountable and got me on track. The first 12 pounds came off pretty easily. Then, it was a bit slower, but because I stuck with the program, it consistently came off.

When I moved to Los Angeles at 21, I was on my way to better health and felt more in control. I was a secretary at that time, so I sat most of the day. I definitely had bumps and challenges along the way, but I was determined to get the once lean, fit body back that I had when I was in high school as a cheerleader, gymnast, and sprinter! It was when I joined a gym and began working out with weights that I really started to see the changes. Unfortunately, I made a lot of the mistakes that many women do when they don’t really understand how to exercise properly. I worked with heavy weights and didn’t do enough cardio. So I got really strong, but I was very bulky! Also, I still was in the bad habit of eating three big meals a day instead of small little mini-meals throughout the day. It really wasn’t until I was in my late thirties that I figured it out.

The last thing I needed to get control of was my love for sweets, and it wasn’t easy . . . I decided to just starve myself of all carbs and sugars for about 2 weeks. It was truly amazing what happened. I sincerely didn’t crave them anymore! I would never have believed in a million years that I would actually desire a delicious piece of fish with vegetables over a pizza!

I think having so much energy and feeling my body toned and lean also gave me extra incentive. Then, when I became a personal trainer at the gym I was working out at, I was literally exercising with my clients all day long doing ab and midsection routines with them. Before I knew it, my waist was tiny and my abs were ripped. I had a six-pack for the first time, and I was pumped!

Now if I really want to have a chocolate chip cookie, I’ll have one . . . but only one. And sometimes, I don’t even eat the whole thing. I am satisfied with a bite or two. For me, it was a major shift in the way I associated and looked at food. Also, the more educated and aware I became, the easier it was to treat my body with respect. I got into “right-thinking” mode and didn’t want to sabotage myself anymore. Some of the tools that helped me along the way were thought-provoking, motivational, and inspirational books and tapes that would put me in the present moment. Now, there is such a wealth of extra support at your fingertips. Beachbody® has developed such an amazing community that you’re crazy if you don’t take advantage of it.
